Understanding the Nobel Peace Prize: A Symbol of Humanity’s Progress

What does it mean to win the Nobel Peace Prize ?  The honor is awarded to those who have greatly benefited humanity. It includes international achievement in such fields as literature, peace, medicine, physics, economics and chemistry. In the lives of American presidents, there have been four to receive this honor: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama 1. Roosevelt was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in 1906. The prize was awarded to him for his help  in mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War. 2. Woodrow Wilson won the Nobel in 1919, for his establishment of the League of Nations. He developed the “Fourteen Points” peace plan following World War I. From those points was formed the League of Nations and a foundational concept for peace negotiations. 3. Jimmy Carter won the Nobel in 2002. The award was bestowed upon him because of his dedication to advancing peace, democracy and human rights. An example of his efforts was the founding in 1982 of the Carter Center. This organization was established jointly by him and his wife Rosalyn, in the pursuit of peaceful and democratic solutions. 4. Barack Obama received the Nobel in 2009. The prize was awarded to him for his contribution in strengthening international diplomacy.
